Infectious diseases: there are many many different types of infectious diseases. We see bacterial infections - these are infected wounds, infected ears eyes, or mouth, infected skin, and internal infections (lung, liver, intestines, pancreas, muscle, bone, etc). We see fungal infections (ears, skin, lung, bone). We also see tick borne infections. People ask whether they should vaccinate their dogs against lyme disease. We currently have very little Lyme disease in the state of Missouri. So, if your dog does not go out of state, you don’t need to. If your dog does go out of state, tell me where you will be going and I will tell you if it is necessary. While we don’t have Lyme disease here, we have many other tick borne diseases. Missouri is the Ehrlichia capital of the country. We also see Babesia, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Tularemia, Hemobartonella, and others.

Parasitic diseases: we talked about external parasites, including fleas and ticks under skin problems.  We also see internal parasites causing problems. Heartworms are probably the ones people worry the most about. We also see hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms that live primarily in the stomach and intestinal tract. Clients will occasionally notice tapeworms in their pet's stool, on their pet's bedding, or on the hair around their dog's anus.  They look like little pieces of rice.  There are also 1-celled parasites that can cause problems for your pet’s stomach or intestines. And there are rare parasites that can infect your dog’s urinary, respiratory, or nervous systems.  We have many products that do an excellent job on parasite control for your pets.
